Knee replacement surgery requires the replacement of the cartilage in the knee joint. The cartilage at the ends of the bones that form the knee joint can become worn down over time, leading to pain and a lack of mobility. During knee replacement surgery, the surgeon removes the worn cartilage and implants a metal or alloy cap at the tip of each bone. Working together, these implants restore function to the knee joint.
Types of Knee Replacement Procedures in Baltimore
Total Knee Replacement
During a total knee replacement, the surgeon replaces the cartilage where the femur, or thigh bone, and the tibia, or shin bone, meet. The cartilage is replaced with either a metal or alloy implant.
Partial Knee Replacement
Knee pain may be caused by damage to only one bone that makes up the knee joint. If this is the case, the surgeon will perform a partial knee replacement. During this procedure, the cartilage of only one of the bones is removed and replaced with an implant. The implant is then aligned with the existing healthy cartilage.
Torn ACL
The anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) is one of four ligaments crucial to your knee’s stability. This ligament connects your femur, or thigh bone, to your tibia or shin bone. If this ligament is torn, even partially, it can impact the functionality of your knee and make it unstable. Depending on the injury, a surgeon will use a type of graft to repair the ligament and restore the knee’s functionality.
